So far, the Greenbelt Program has protected 19,538 acres of land in Charleston County. $77.5 million has been awarded and $17.5 million remains. The program is funded by the Transportation Sales Tax, which was approved in a county-wide referendum on Nov. 2, 2004. It is expected to raise $1.3 billion for Charleston County over 25 years. Of the $1.3 billion, $221 million is designated for Greenbelts.
County Council adopted the CGP in June 2006 which provides guidance on how the citizens said they want to see the Greenbelt portion of the sales tax spent.
