So far, the Greenbelt Program has protected 20,211 acres of land in Charleston County. $89 million has been awarded and $6 million remains. The program is funded by the Transportation Sales Tax, which was approved in a county-wide referendum on Nov. 2, 2004. It is expected to raise $1.3 billion for Charleston County over 25 years. Of the $1.3 billion, $221 million is designated for Greenbelts.
