Public Meeting on Alternative Designs for US 17 and SC 61 Connector
Improvements Funded by the Transportation "Half-Cent" Sales Tax
Meeting on Nov. 16 from 6-8 p.m. at St. Andrews Elementary
School
Charleston County RoadWise will hold a public meeting on Thursday, Nov. 16
to gather input on US 17 and SC 61 Connector improvements that will be
funded by the Transportation "Half-Cent" Sales Tax.
The West Ashley meeting will be held from 6-8 p.m. at the St Andrews
Elementary School (30 Chadwick Drive, Charleston).
This is the second public meeting on the US 17 and SC 61 Connector
improvements; the first meeting was held on July 27. During the July 27
public meeting, residents provided design engineers with a variety of
comments. These comments and ideas have been incorporated into a series of
designs that will be presented during the Nov. 16 meeting.
The purpose of the Nov. 16 meeting is to present the proposed intersection
designs and gather further input from residents on these designs. During the
meeting, participants will be given an opportunity to respond to the
proposed designs and make additional comments.
"Public input is important during the design phase of project development
because increased public involvement assists us in developing a project that
is sensitive to the concerns of the community," said Peter Valiquette,
Charleston County RoadWise Project Manager. "The goal is to provide relief
to neighborhoods near the connector by easing traffic congestion in the
area."
The Charleston County RoadWise Program manages the road and highway projects
that are being funded by the Transportation Sales Tax. Public comment and
input into project design is an important step before final design decisions
on projects are made, and before actual construction begins.
There are other follow-up meetings planned for projects funded by the
Transportation Sales Tax:
-
A second design phase public meeting is being planned for the
Palmetto Commerce Parkway Phase II improvements project.
-
A third public meeting is also being planned on the Harbor View Road
design phase.
The public should also anticipate initial public meetings for the design
phase of the following improvement projects that will be funded by the
Transportation Sales Tax:
-
Glenn McConnell Parkway/Bees Ferry Road Intersection
-
Folly Road/Maybank Highway Intersection
The meeting dates for these projects have not yet been set, but will be
announced.
