Public
Meeting on Folly Road and Camp Road Intersection Improvements
RoadWise to present new alternative design developed to address
the public’s concern over impacts to trees along Camp Road.
Charleston County RoadWise is holding a third public meeting to gather input
on proposed plans to improve traffic congestion at the Folly Road and Camp
Road intersection on James Island. At the meeting, Charleston County will be
presenting an additional project alternative, which has been developed to
address the public’s concern over impacts to trees along Camp Road.
The meeting will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 27, at the James
Island Charter High School (1000 Fort Johnson Road, James Island).
The project, which is funded by the Transportation Half-Cent Sales Tax, aims
to address traffic congestion by improving turning lanes and signalization
at the Folly Road and Camp Road intersection.
The County has
already held two meetings on this project, on November 13, 2007, and on May
14, 2008. Normally, there is only one meeting held to gather input for
alternatives on a project, but Charleston County Council held a second and
now a third meeting due increased public interest in the project.
Those attending the meeting will have an opportunity to make comments, ask
questions and review the new proposed alternative for improvements at the
intersection.
The Charleston
County Transportation Sales Tax referendum was approved by voters in
November of 2004. Collection of the Transportation Sales Tax began in May
2005 and will continue for 25 years or until $1.303 billion is generated for
transportation and greenspace related projects and improvements.
The Folly
Road/Camp Road intersection improvements project is one of the projects
approved by voters in the second bond referendum. In November of 2006, the
voters of Charleston County authorized the county to issue an additional
$205 million in bonds, which will be repaid through Transportation Sales Tax
proceeds. The entire amount of this second bond referendum is allocated for
the following transportation improvement projects:
-
Glen McConnell Parkway /
I-526 Loop Ramp
-
Bees Ferry Road Widening
-
Folly Road/Camp
Road Intersection Improvements
-
Future Drive Loop to
Ladson
-
Maybank Highway Widening
-
