Night
Work Starts May 3 for Folly Road/Maybank Highway Intersection Improvements
Project
Lane
closures to occur from 9 p.m. – 5:30 a.m. beginning on Sunday, May 3
Charleston County RoadWise advises the public that nighttime lane
closures will occur in both directions on Folly Road from Wappoo Cut to the
Maybank Highway intersection.
The nighttime lane
closures will begin on Sunday, May 3, and continue intermittently for
approximately one month. The lane closures will only occur at night from 9
p.m. – 5:30 a.m. to minimize effects on traffic.
Work on the project will
include removing the concrete island on Folly Road at the Maybank Highway
intersection and removal of the acceleration lane and the curb and gutter at
the Folly Road and Country Club Drive intersection.
At no point will the
entire roadway be blocked to traffic. The public is asked to take notice of
traffic control signs and message board information.
The project is funded by
the
Transportation Half-Cent Sales Tax.
The project, which is
expected to be completed by the spring of 2010, is funded by the Charleston
County Transportation Sales Tax and managed by the Charleston County
RoadWise Program.
The
project description is as follows:
-
The intersection
design addresses the dangerous left turns from Folly Road onto Old Folly
Road and from Old Folly Road onto Maybank Highway. The new design
includes mast-arm signals (stoplights) to be added to the intersections
to allow traffic to turn safely from Folly Road onto Old Folly Road and
from Old Folly Road onto Maybank Highway.
-
New, landscaped
medians with lighting and irrigation will be added to Maybank Highway,
Folly Road and Old Folly Road. Sidewalks with pedestrian lighting will
be added along Maybank Highway, Folly Road and Old Folly Road.
-
The entire project
area will be repaved and will have new pavement markings including
crosswalks and signs. New stormwater drainage facilities will also be
added, including a new 60-inch drainage pipe crossing underneath Maybank
Highway and continuing under Wappoo Creek Drive, and all new curbs and
gutters along the project area.
The
public can get up-to-date project information, including construction status
and traffic alerts, online at
