Traffic Alert:
Road Closures and Garage Detour Announced for
Bee Street and Courtenay Drive Improvement Project
Charleston
County will oversee major bond project funded by the Transportation Sales Tax
The first phase of
construction that will be noticeable to the public for the
Bee Street and Courtenay Drive Improvement Project in downtown Charleston
will begin on Monday, May 24, and take approximately four months to complete.
The public should be aware of
the following road work that will occur beginning May 24:
Closures to
Bee Street
Main
Entrance closed to MUSC parking garage
-
The work on Bee Street
will require the closure of the main entrance of the MUSC parking garage
located at the corner of Bee Street and Courtenay Drive.
-
Access to the garage will
be available through the rear entrance across from Bravo Street as indicated
by detour signs.
-
The detour will route
motorists from Courtenay Drive along Ralph H. Johnson Drive to Bravo Street.
Motorists will then cross Bee Street and go in the rear entrance of the
garage.
Lane
closures on Courtenay Drive
-
Road work may also occur
along Courtenay Drive from Cannon Street to Ralph H. Johnson Drive.
-
Any temporary lane
closures will occur overnight between 8 p.m. and 9 a.m., on different
weekday and weekend schedules as restricted by the
S.C. Department of Transportation.
-
At no time will Courtenay
Drive be blocked in either direction.
All motorists traveling
through the project area are asked to be aware of equipment and crews and to be
prepared for delays beginning on May 24. Alternate routes are recommended if
possible.
The public is asked to take
notice of traffic control signs and message board information, and to note that
all road work is dependent on the weather.
As other work on the project
that could disrupt traffic arises, notifications will be announced through news
releases issued to local media and posted on both the
Charleston County Government and
Charleston County RoadWise Web sites.
Background
information on the project:
The Bee Street and Courtenay
Drive Improvement Project
was requested by the
City of Charleston and approved by voters in the
second Transportation Sales Tax bond referendum. The project, which is
expected to be completed in less than a year, is funded by the
Charleston County Transportation Sales Tax and managed by
Charleston County Government. The improvements will help traffic flow into
and around downtown’s medical centers and surrounding areas during peak hours
and provide drainage relief along the Bee Street area.
The public
can get up-to-date project information on the project, including construction
status and traffic alerts, online at
http://www.ccroadwise.org/bee_st_and_courtenay_dr.html.
