Traffic Alert: Temporary Lane Closures/Shifts
and Sidewalk Closure for Bee Street and Courtenay Drive Improvement
Project
Charleston
County Government announces the following traffic alerts for the
Bee
Street and Courtenay Drive Improvement Project:
Courtenay Drive
July 6
through September 30:
- On Sunday, July 6, lane shifts will occur on Courtenay Drive
from Cannon Street to Ralph Johnson Drive.
- The work will occur during the day and night. One lane will
remain open in each direction to minimize the impact on traffic.
- Beginning Sunday, July 11, the sidewalk in front of
MUSC’s
Wellness Center and Harper Student Center along Courtenay Drive
from Bee Street to Ralph Johnson Drive will be closed. Pedestrians
will be directed to the east side of Courtenay Drive; they can cross
at Ralph H. Johnson Drive to access the Wellness Center and Student
Center through the driveway along Ralph H. Johnson Drive or along
Bravo Street.
Bee Street
July
6 through July 10:
- On Tuesday, July 6 through Saturday, July 10, a lane shift will
occur for utility work on Bee Street from Courtenay Street to
President Street.
- The work will occur during the day between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- On-street parking will be blocked off in this area so that
two-way directional traffic can be maintained.
June
28 through August 28:
- Beginning the week of June 28, lane closures will occur for
water line relocation work on Bee Street from Cherry Street to
Lockwood Boulevard.
- The approximate duration of this work is 45 to 60 days.
- An 11’ lane will be maintained in each direction and no on
street parking will be permitted.
- During this time, the main entrance to the Ralph H. Johnson VA
Medical Center may be blocked at times and traffic will be directed
to use the entrance on Bravo Street.
July 10
through July 18
- On Saturday, July 10 through Sunday, July 18, lane closures will
occur for other utility work on Bee Street from Cherry Street to
Lockwood Boulevard and at the Bee Street and Courtenay Drive
intersection.
- The work will occur at night between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. except on
the weekends. On weekends, work will occur between 9 a.m. and 4
p.m.
- Flagmen will be on site directing traffic since two way
directional traffic will not be maintained.
Bravo Street
July
10 through July 18:
- On Saturday, July 10 through Sunday, July 18, lane closures will
occur for utility work on Bravo Street at the Bravo Street and Bee
Street Intersection.
- The work will occur at night between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. except on
the weekends. On weekends, work will occur between 9 a.m. and 4
p.m.
- Flagmen will be on site directing traffic.
Previously announced and ongoing Bee Street road work:
- Bee Street will be closed in both directions between Courtenay
Drive and Bravo Street.
Main entrance closed to MUSC parking garage:
The work on Bee Street will
require the closure of the main entrance of the MUSC parking garage
located at the corner of Bee Street and Courtenay Drive. Access to the
garage will be available through the rear entrance across from Bravo
Street as indicated by detour signs.
The detour will route motorists from Courtenay
Drive along Ralph H. Johnson Drive to Bravo Street. Motorists will then
cross Bee Street and go in the rear entrance of the garage.
The public is asked to take notice of traffic
control signs and message board information. All road work is dependent
on the weather.
Every effort is being made to schedule
necessary lane closures for the project during off- peak, nighttime and
weekend hours when possible.
The project, which is expected to be completed
in less than a year, is funded by the
Charleston County Transportation Sales Tax and
managed by the Charleston County RoadWise Program. Charleston County
RoadWise is the name of
Charleston
County Government’s management program for the
construction of roads, highways, resurfacing, paving and drainage
projects that are funded by the Transportation Sales Tax.
